I am not sure we are discussing the same issue. I have no problem with Street View on my iPhone. My problem is with the "ordinary" bird's eye satellite and hybrid views. They stall and even if a full screen loads, I cannot zoom in.

I do not have this problem with the ordinary map view, only the satellite and hybrid views. What is your experience with them?

It seems to be.

I'm using WiFi so it's pretty quick. That being said StreetView can take a bit of downloading even on WiFi.<div class="feedflare">

Since the coming of StreetView, I cannot zoom in in Satellite view under 2.2 and even just loading a Satellite or Hybrid view usually stalls. StreetView is fine but I need to be able to get a bird's eye view as well.

I am using WiFi.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Any solution?

You'll find it very quickly on the VFNZ forums. Just note that they don't support it, so it's a "use at your own risk" sort of thing....which makes me feel they're being a little hypocritical by allowing others to mention it. But hey....at least they let you talk about it there ;-)

Please see the vodafone forums related to this....the policy of this site is to not discuss these sorts of changes, given that Vodafone isn't prepared to support them officially.

I would also express caution with the apporaches...not because they don't work, but because they will impact your prepay bill. I folowed discussions on that site to block my phone from using data and to use a prepay, but didn't realise that it would pull data the non-3G way and still bill me a $1 a day.....so I have now completely removed all APN information to block the kind of activities you mention.

Which leads me to respond to DBMandrake's comment....

Don't worry, you won't be able to resist the temptation for long, I give you a few days until you change the APN and come over to the dark side

Umm...hate to disappoint, but over a month later I'm still more than happy to access those sorts of services from a wireless point rather than pay VFNZ data fees ;-)

Hi to everyone. I recently bought an iPhone, two days ago to be exact, and just like what I've read in recent posts, the staff initially told me that I can't use some features of the iphone if I am just on prepay :( . I felt a bit disappointed knowing that that is their policy according to the salesperson. I left the store and came back and got to speak to a different salesperson, who sold me the iphone (let me add that that was the fastest NZ$1129 ever, within 5minutes, I was out of there). Before buying, the salesperson said that I can actually use the features as they have this new promo $1/10MB on prepay... that I don't have to do anything and I can just access the internet, etc.

Of course, too excited me didn't even bother to ask the exact steps I have to do to be able to do this.

Basically, I just want to be able to use the maps, browse the internet, weather and app store on prepay. Can anyone please tell me exactly how I can do this? And what's APN? I'm starting to get emotional about it as I am having such a difficult time finding a solution to this dilemma. I hope you guys could give some advice.

Sorry but just got to NZ and I am not aware of the different network settings you guys might have here.

Cheers!<div class="feedflare">

cowpatz: There are plenty of freelance developers out there as Phil previously mentioned. All of these guys operate on a development contract - you own the IP, they do the work, you own the app at the end. If you're in Christchurch I can recommend a company here for you.

Phil - I might be able to help you out with an RSS app for the site for free, PM with some more information and i'll see whether i've got the skills you need. Just depends how complex you want to get, but XML parsing is easy enough and then it's just a matter of displaying the information how you like.<div class="feedflare">

Another tip is to read the the iPhone Developers Cookbook by Erica Sadun - this is available online from InformIT online and if you register with them you save 30% or so.

It's an excellent resource for learning some good tricks on the iPhone.<div class="feedflare">

What happens after 24 months contract is up? - by: DBMandrake

While I've seen unconfirmed reports Vodafone NZ iPhones are carrier-unlocked (I'd still count unofficial forum postings on Vodafone's site as unconfirmed) today I stumbled across the following on the Apple site:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937

It very clearly spells out which countries sell locked and unlocked iPhones, and NZ is one of only 13 countries that gets an unlocked version of the iPhone :-)

To be clear, carrier-unlocked means if you go overseas you can buy a sim in that country and insert it for use without any issues - this is not the same as roaming where you use your Vodafone NZ sim overseas. (And pay exorbitant roaming charges)

It's at least a small satisfaction to know that despite Vodafone NZ's high plan prices compared to other countries (especially on data) we do actually get the benefit of buying an unlocked iphone that most countries do not, and the buy outright price is not significantly more expensive than other countries such as the UK.

Hi everyone,
Please pardon my ignorance but I have a burning question that I can't seem to find answers for in this forum.
I have an iPhone 3G and am currently on the iPhone250 plan.

My question is: What happens after the 24 months contract with Vodafone is up? Will the iPhone be officially unlocked then? (meaning I'll be able to pop in any carrier's SIM card - worldwide - and have it work on the iPhone)

I would appreciate your responses and comments.

Kind regards<div class="feedflare">

It's all very interesting really. The apps are all variations on a theme.

For example...Discover is cool for me as it is webDav and I didn't have to activate wireless on my iMac...just to have the iPhone running on the wireless network in my flat. Briefcase Lite required I activate remote login, which I wasn't keen on.

That said, I'm using none of these at the moment. Still using a Flash drive or (if it's a small file) dropbox (http://www.getdropbox.com/) which has an iPhone interface you can use. I'm sure they'll bring out an iPhone app.

To add to that list, there's a really excellent app called AirSharing....

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=289943355&mt=8

It's a bit costly, at $9.99 NZ, but I got it when it was free and I can say that it is an excellent application which I use frequently. Pretty much like a flash drive, but wireless, and you can view files on it such as pdf or html files and heaps of others. I find this much better than "Discover" because you don't have to use a messy web browser... you can... but it's much quicker and more efficient using the Mac OS X Finder, or Windows equivalent. Having said that, Discover is free...

Thought I would come back to this and see what people are using. I've also discovered (pun not intended) today "Discover"....

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewArtist?id=292416858

It's free and you access your iPhone via a web browser.

We also seem to have missed Briefcase, in paid and lite (free) versions....

I want a proper RSS app developed for NZMac.com, but can't afford to pay unfortunately, and got turned down by a couple of developers. I also came across apploop.com for this, but they seem to have been a victim of their own press release. The news that they have supposedly developed quite an automated system for developing RSS aps saw them hit quite hard...even TechCrunch signed up for an app. To date, I've not heard from them and I don't think anyone has had an app come out.

Cheers,

A friend and I are currently looking into developing a few iPhone applications with some ideas that we have, and could possibly have a go at your idea some time. However, we are by no means experts, as we have never developed an application before.

So no guarantees that we would be able to complete this app, but if you would be interested in us having a go, feel free to contact me by email at 'cuby07ATgmail.com'

I think this presentation is superb....

It raises some interesting UI challenges related to the iPhone. I do think the iPhone has a fairly intuitive interface for the most part, but delving deeper, there are some UI conflicts that are pointed out.

Hi,

I moved this to the buy/sell area simply as that section clears out poasts after 90 days and this (I imagine) needs to be answered in that time.

Re 1 and 2, I think you are unlikely to be able to find such information. What you might want to do is look at Apple financial results, but more specifically, the press discussions that occur after. Search for "points of interest from apple financial call" (or stuf like that) where they may expand a bit on information....but certainly not to the degree that you're asking.

Re commercial and free...the latter is hard for me, as I tend to download any that look interesting, but often delete in minutes.

Currently commercial = 10
Free = 32

I've excluded web apps (such as the NZMac.com and NZiPhone.com ones) as it sounds like you are talking about stuff off the iTunes site.

If anyone can help, it would be appreciated. Either first hand knowledge or information you have heard or read would be fine.

I am doing market research and wonder how many application/game downloads are really occuring in the App Store/iTunes for iPhones/iPod Touch devices. I know how many total downloads they have (200 million), but any only concerned with Paid Apps/Games. So if anyone can answer these questions or share some light, thanks

1) How many of the 200 million downloads are from paid apps
2) Does anyone know how many paid downloads it takes to take the #1 spot daily, #10 spot, #25 spot, and #50 spot
3) How many apps/games have you paid for, and how many free ones have you downloaded.

Thanks again.<div class="feedflare">

Glad to hear you received a reply. The bugreport.apple.com is specifically designed for developers (hence the requirement to be registered to submit bugs or suggestions), but this means that they really pay attention to what is said. I've used it several times, but mostly just for bug reports. The only issue with that site is the hefty descriptions you have to give which can take a fair amount of time.

Apple's standard iPhone feedback page (that DBMandrake posted) Is good and I'm sure Apple reads all feedback, but they don't pay as much attention as they probably get hundreds of posts through that everyday...

Yes those problems bug me too.

The 160 character counter was not a big deal, until I realised I'd blown $20 over the last week on txting to someone who had also just got an iphone - the fast (relative to T9) predictive keyboard, the lack of a counter, and the iChat style interface that makes you think you're using IM makes it easy to send double or triple size text's without even realising, which can really sting you if you pay per txt.

Not being able to use a custom ring tone for texts is also a bit silly, although I have grown used to the Tri-tone sound now.

The things that annoy me though, is the inability to change the sounds for New Mail, Sent Mail, and Calendar alerts AT ALL, apart from turning them off. In a work environment the New Mail sound is simply too lame and quiet sounding, and unless the volume is right up and the room is quiet you won't hear it.

Really, all of these sounds should be customizable using custom ring tones, it's an artificial restriction.

Other annoyances are the SMS preview that pops up - you simply can't disable it when the phone is unlocked, and sometimes you just don't want a private txt from your other half popping up on the screen for all to read when you're trying to show off your iphone ;-)

You can however disable txt previews when the screen is locked, but it is NOT disabled by default. Crazy.

More niggles - if a text comes in while the phone is locked the screen will light up and say "New Text Message" for a few seconds which is great, but if you receive a new email it just plays the "Dong" sound and the screen remains dark. "New Email" on the screen for a few seconds would be great.

Likewise when you press a button on the lock screen you'll see a summary of missed calls and text's, but NOT email. It should say "3 missed calls, 3 text messages, 3 new emails" for example.

If this seems like a lot of griping its not really, it's just a few annoying and minor niggles on an otherwise great device.

I'm really surprised Apple replied back from their submission form - if someone is actually taking note of submissions I'll post there myself, hopefully with enough feedback apple will address some of these issues - none of them are rocket science and I know a LOT of people are unhappy about the inability to disable text message previews.

If you just can't wait for apple to fix these issues, if you're willing to Jailbreak you can resolve a lot of them - I know for sure that custom sounds for new text and new mail are possible when jailbroken, and I think text message previews can be neutered as well.

Even though I was an early adopter of Jailbreaking on the ipod touch I'm not quite willing to jailbreak my iphone yet, as I rely more on my phone than my ipod...

Finally got around to submitting the two things I wanted to comment on....not being able to assign a custom sound for SMS notification (response in 3 days) and no way of knowing SMS text length (1 week). I'm impressed they did respond.

I'd say they'd take some of these things and add them to the list of stuff to bring in at a later date (he says, typing with fingers crossed).
